AI Photo Not Looking Right? Fix These 7 Common Problems

Alex Rivera • Oct 30, 2026 • 5 views

You copied the prompt, uploaded your photo, and the result is... close, but wrong. Maybe the face drifted. Maybe there is an extra finger. Maybe the skin looks like plastic.

Do not delete the prompt and give up. Almost every bad result comes from one of seven problems, and each has a known fix. Find yours below.

1. "That is not my face"

Why it happens: The AI rebuilt your face instead of copying it. This happens with dark photos, group photos, filtered selfies, and prompts where the face is described in flowery words.

The fix: Upload a clear, bright, front-facing photo with only you in it. Add this line at the very top of the prompt: "Preserve his exact facial identity from the uploaded photo. 100% face match, do not change the face shape, eyes, nose, or lips." Then regenerate. The full identity lock guide on this site covers this in depth.

2. Extra or bent fingers

Why it happens: Hands are hard for AI. Poses with hands near the face, holding objects, or half out of frame are the riskiest.

The fix: First, regenerate once. Hands are partly luck. If it keeps failing, pick a version of the style where the hands rest simply, in pockets, on the bike, or at the sides. In your follow-up message, write: "Fix the hands, natural fingers, five fingers on each hand." That direct instruction works more often than a fresh full prompt.

3. Plastic, waxy skin

Why it happens: The prompt or the tool smoothed the skin into a beauty-filter look.

The fix: Add "natural skin texture with visible pores, no airbrushing, no beauty filter, real photo look" to the prompt. If the prompt has a negative section, make sure it includes "plastic skin, airbrushed face." The realism guide on this site explains the full approach.

4. The outfit came out wrong

Why it happens: Long outfit descriptions sometimes get mixed up, colors swap, or details merge. Gemini is more likely to skip outfit details in very long prompts.

The fix: Keep the outfit sentence short and concrete: color, item, one detail. "Black pathani kurta with white pajama" beats a paragraph of fabric description. If one item is wrong, correct just that item in a follow-up message instead of rerunning everything: "Same photo, change the jacket to black."

5. The background is messy or wrong

Why it happens: Vague places like "nice location" let the AI improvise, and its improvisation can be strange: floating objects, warped buildings, unreadable signs.

The fix: Name a specific, simple place: "a quiet street in Lahore at golden hour," "inside a car, driver seat," "plain grey studio wall." Specific beats fancy. Simple backgrounds also make your face and outfit stand out more.

6. Text on the image is misspelled

Why it happens: AI image tools draw letters as shapes. Short words survive; long ones melt.

The fix: Keep text to two to four words. Put the exact text in quotes inside the prompt, in capital letters. Regenerate until it lands, and save each attempt you like. For names on birthday or poster prompts, this patience is normal, even for experienced users.

7. The photo looks good but feels fake

Why it happens: Everything is too perfect: perfect light, perfect skin, perfect pose, perfect place, all at once.

The fix: Ask for one candid element. "Candid photo, slight natural smile, a few loose strands of hair, soft shadows on one side of the face." One imperfect detail makes the whole picture believable.

When to change the photo instead of the prompt

If you have regenerated three times, fixed the wording, and the result is still wrong, the uploaded photo is the problem. This is true far more often than people think. Swap in your clearest selfie, the one taken in daylight with no filter, and run the original prompt untouched. Most "bad prompts" turn good at that moment.

A simple order to try fixes

  1. Regenerate once, same everything
  2. Fix the one wrong thing with a short follow-up message
  3. Swap in a clearer photo
  4. Shorten and sharpen the prompt
  5. Try the other tool, ChatGPT if you used Gemini, Gemini if you used ChatGPT

Work down the list and stop as soon as it looks right. And save the winners as you go. Your best photo of the month is often one regeneration away from the one you almost deleted.
